When it comes to a new house, most of us think of the design experts and the initial costs but very little thought is given to the maintenance. A lot of times the type of fixtures, fittings, or finishes that we chose seem cheap initially but in the long run cost us a lot of money. The problem with this is that once installed it is not very easy to replace the elements that are expensive to maintain. Hence, to make you more aware, we have listed down 6 mistakes that are sure to slowly increase your running costs each month. Take a look.

1. Appliances on standby

Leaving appliances on standby is one of the most common ways to conserve energy. It does not take much to implement this little trick, you will start to notice the benefits in terms of savings soon after.

2. Bad lighting

Sometimes, light fixtures tend to suck in a lot of energy, this mostly happens in the case of fixtures that are not energy rated. Further, our tendency to keep the light on even when not needed also contributes to higher costs. As a good practice, it is better to rely on natural light. This not only provides a whole new level of comfort but also is efficient in keeping the running costs low.

3. Misusing the refrigerator

Apparently, the refrigerator and the freezer consume more energy when they are empty, hence if you want to avoid unnecessary energy waste, do not leave the fridge empty. Always leave behind some stuff to avoid unnecessary wastage in the kitchen.

4. Leaving the charger in the socket

A lot of us unconsciously tend to leave chargers in the socket after we are done with charging. However, this results in slow wastage of energy, a misuse that can be easily avoided by being a little more aware.

5. The washing machine

Washing machines are the types of equipment that consume a lot of energy. Always make it a point to use them only when fully loaded, further many modern machines have economic usage setting. It will not be suddenly apparent but using economic settings will make a huge difference in the long run. You can also opt for machines that are green rated right at the time of purchase, these could be a little more expensive but a very sound investment in the long run.

6. Cooking devices

The stoves or the cooking plates are another set of appliances that consume very high energy. Always make it a point to turn them off when not in use and make sure you maintain them properly for an efficient long term running cost.
