With each passing day our cities are expanding due to rising population, better modes of transport, and lower land costs. Hence, today we come across an increasing number of people who prefer to live in the suburbs or on the outskirts of the city than struggling in small houses in the city centre. Accordingly, our today's article is about houses in the outskirts of the city. Rather than focusing on large houses, we are today focusing only on small houses that can accomodate a family of 4-6 individuals.

1. An elegant double storey structure

This elegant house is located in the woods and acts as the holiday home for a small family. The house is built primarily with wood with wooden cladding on its main facade. The sloping roof further gives the house a nice charming appearance.

2. A minimalist option

This single storey house is built with simple design features and is provided with an elegant external cladding of wood. We particularly liked the horizontal pattern of the cladding that contrast wonderfully with the surrounding landscape.

3. Scandinavian design

The most prominant feature of this house is its sloping roof and the dormer window. We also liked the combination of the white walls with the wood cladding on the facade.

4. A modern house for a small family

With its simple layout and sleek massing, this house comes across as a modern version of a cottage. The large window openings combined with the white colored walls and gray roofs furhter add on to the charm of this beautiful house.

5. Stone as a facade element

With its sleek sloping roof, monotonous color palatte, and prominant stone cladded walls, this house looks extremely classy as well as provides its user with a comfortable residence which allows in ample amounts of sunlight.

6. A minimalist retreat

This house is one of our favourites. Designed as a simple modernist cottage, this house with its bold external cladding and large glass openings allows its users a beautiful space to live as well as enjoy the surrounding nature.

7. A suburban house built within a tight budget

This suburban house built by our experts at Iwakawa Studio is a simple single storied structure with minimal openings and a modest outdoor space. In order to fit it within the budget, the architects have opted for precast walls as well as roofing materials.

8. Best of both materials

This house is designed in such a way that it has the best of both, exposed brickwork as well woden cladding. The lovely exposed brick facade gives an impression of a pixellated wall and contrasts wonderfully with the small wood cladded structure.

9. An old country side charm

Built as a simple family retreat, this beautiful cottage provides its residents with a warm shelter built admist the natural landscape. The dark gray sloping roofs look particularly impressive while the wooden cladded facade adds on to the charm of the house. However, our favourite is the lovely wooden terrace that is the perfect space to enjoy cup of coffee and soak in the sunlight.

10. A sleek and modern residence

This modern house with its asymmetrical windows and a large first floor cutout looks extremely charming. We also loved the large outdoor terrace which is large enough to accomodate a large number of friends or the extended family.
