Returning to an India that had well changed since they last lived here, the owners of the house were moving back from California to Bangalore.

Our intention was to look for synergies between the life and architecture both in California and India, and design a house that was truly modern, with traditional planning and values.

The design is a play on the Courtyards and Lines. Courtyards and planning inspired from the traditional Indian Haveli, and the Lines and transparency inspired from the from the Mid Century Modern Architects of California – the likes of Richard Neutra and Donald Wexler etc.

We started with the Planning and courtyards, in a Traditional Indian fashion. Where the hierarchy of the courtyard defines the spaces around it and its use.

With the large openings creating a seamless flow of the exterior to the interior. Minimalist, and modern interiors continues the story of the exterior.

The use of Natural Stone – The living room natural unfinished travertine wall which becomes the back drop of the living while also defining the end of the outdoor deck. Rough Dholpur Sandstone while used as wall cladding in the exterior courtyards, was also used as a backdrop for the bath in the Master Bathroom. Limorian Blue Marble was used as the bar top and on the side tables in the Living Room. Indian Black Marble was used in a lapatura finish on the Dining Table .

Jalis and Screens – The open and transparent interior spaces, are layered with screen walls and Jalis, to give the privacy to the desired areas, yet allowing for views into the spaces beyond. The SS Framed Perforated screen of the Bar – the perforations are matched with the requirement of privacy . Foyer Screen - On entering the house we are greeted with a framed sandwiched glass with raw silk, giving one an idea of the green courtyard, and the staircase , yet screening the house from the large entry door. Prayer Room – The Doors act as a screen that disappears on days when the prayer room needs to be a part of the Family Room. Jali Screen as a security device and privacy for the Master Bathroom. The Pattern was studied in detail to give the right amount of light yet. The powder coated MS Screen creates different shadows in the Master bath and the Master Bedroom during different times of the year.

Furniture – The Furniture was exculisevely designed for the
house. The Dining table a 10 seater, without a header and seater, was designed without any intermediate legs. the 14' x 4' table is clad in veneer, and has an inlay of Black Indian Marble. The tables in the living and family rooms are made of teak wood.

Staircase was an important aspect of the design, – with it needing to be transparent and framing the ornamental courtyard.

The Master Bedroom, and kids rooms are all personally designed and accessorized.

Function and an open plan for the house are important aspects of the design.

The Formal courtyard, manicured surrounds the Formal Living room. Primarily used for recreation, large gatherings, and events.

The Family court becomes the heart of the house. The Barbeque Deck, Family Room, Informal Dining, Kitchen and the first floor deck area looking into it. The landscape is designed for play and recreation. With a Basketball hoop, and a sand pit.

Pulling in the landscape into the built Mass. – The Ornamental Court forms the back drop of the open staircase. With the rhythmic lines of the railing, and the play of shade and shadow from the pergola above. The Landscape is focused around a singular Champa Tree, and the Ground line rises to intersect into the Dholpur Clad Boundary wall.

The Integration of Screens and Jails into a very clean and transparent planning was required from the Indian perspective. Creating Fluid spaces – yet with suggestive views of what is to come. These happen at the Foyer, the Bar, Puja Room.

Patterns were developed and studied, so that the screens had the desired visual appeal, while also providing for security ( In the Master Bathroom below the skylight glass), and heat reduction. Also casting ever changing shadows during the different periods of the year.

The synergy of the Indian Courtyard, with the Modern Lines, works perfectly. Where the intersecting courtyards create space and shaded terraces. The plays of the large cantilevers in the house, effect ventilators at the roof level for east light to filter inside.

Large openings – for light , and a seamless flow of the exterior to the interior. Minimalist, and modern interiors continues the story of the exterior, with the natural unfinished travertine wall which becomes the back drop of the living space and defines the end of the deck. Function and an open plan for the house are important aspects of the design.
