ARCHILOCO studio associato

Projects

Laura Porporato and Silvano Bandolin in 1996 founded Archiloco studio associato. Both graduated from the Politecnico di Torino in 1991, are coming from previous experiences in the field of design and consulting.

In 1996 the Studio designs, the renovation of the"former depository"  building in the "OGR" old train factory, intended to accommodate classrooms, laboratories and services of the Politecnico di Torino. Previously had been restored two other buildings in the same industrial complex.

Afterwords  the Studio continues to deal with university buildings: Enterprise Incubator offices of the Politecnico di Torino (I3P), new seat in Ivrea for the UniversitB degli Studi di Torino in the former Olivetti typewriters factory, new seat in Lecco for the Politecnico di Milano, new Main hall of the UniversitB di Mantova in the former Monastery of San Francesco.

In 1997, Archiloco was part of the winner group of the design competition for the “Museo dell’Uomo” in the former Carthusian monastery of Collegno, in 2001 leaded the winning group in the design competition for the “former Paper Mill San Cesario” renovation in Torino, in which  were settled: a Youthcenter, a Territorial educational workshops, a public square with a garden and a Nursery school.

In the following years were captured the benefits of the process started in the late 90s.

The deepening of issues related to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings, the exploitation of renewable energy sources, use of sustainable materials bears fruit and leads to the design of several school buildings, such us: Chiomonte Nursery school, Levate Nursery school, Piobesi Nursery and primary school, Bruino Nursery school, Cartura Primary school, Carignano Nursery school.

Through the gradual introduction of these issues within projects, the most appropriate technology mix to achieve the set goals was identified from time to time. The results of the research of innovative solutions and contemporary formal languages tailored to the context of insertion, were applied in the implementation of school buildings, mainly aimed at children, within which the technological component was emphasized and valued also for learning, to promote the growth of environmental awareness of both educators and children.

Staying in the field of public works Archiloco has designed and directed several conversion of historic buildings: former Monastery of Cairate (Town Hall, public library and Exihibition venue of Provincia di Varese), Ivrea Town Hall, S. Paolo d'Argon Civic Center.

Starting in 2006, have also been developed projects of private initiative: building on Via Bonsignore in Turin, reconstruction of housing in via Sanzio in Milan, reconstruction of the former Hotel Madison in Ospedaletti, with residential destination.

Particular attention was dedicated to the restoration of the medieval monumental complex of Palazzo Caratti-Govone, erected on the ruins of a “domus” in the Roman city of Alba Pompeia.

The delicate task of restoration and redefinition of the drawing, subsequent to the archaeological, architectural and artistic finds, allowed to integrate the valuable historical artifacts, greatly increasing the symbolic and commercial value of the building.

The Studio constantly participates in design contests, with particular interest in those issues  concerning environmental sustainability and the relationship existing between space-technology and educational values. In 2013 it participated to the competition for the new Dolzago kindergarten  and the new Charvensod school complex. In both cases, have been proposed buildings with very low carbon footprint (NZEB).
